Minimalist Hospital Bag Checklist

It’s almost baby time and you’re super excited about it!! You know you will need to have your hospital bag ready to go at any given moment that your water breaks or you’re getting consistent contractions. But what do you actually need in that coveted hospital bag? When I was a first time mom I went with luggage. I mean an actual suitcase as if I was boarding a plane for vacation. And my husband had his own luggage also. I filled my bag with so many unnecessary things and ended leaving the hospital with more than I came with. This time with baby #2 I am opting to be a minimalist. And I am sharing my minimalist hospital bag checklist with you so that you can also avoid overpacking things you won’t need or use.

For Mom

Start with yourself first! Yes of course, you want to make sure baby has everything he/she will need -and they will. You are more likely to forget things for yourself when it’s time. Plus your list is likely to be the longest because you- momma- are the one giving birth. Baby will surely take all the shine but you’re the real star of the show! This one’s for you…

  • Going home outfit (think comfy & easy to get into)
  • 2 sets of loungewear (for your stay on the mother/baby unit)
  • Some old underwear (that you don’t mind getting potentially soiled)
  • Robe or sweater (because hospitals are cold)
  • Maternity bra
  • Slippers and/or flip flops
  • Breastfeeding pillow
  • Bonnet or head scarf
  • Chapstick/lip balm

Keep in mind that the hospital will provide you with many comfort items and toiletries. Most institutions will provide you things like nipple cream, numbing spray, peri-bottle, binder (if c-section), disposable underwear, sitz bath, and basic toiletries like comb/brush, toothbrush & paste, lotion, q-tips, etc. If there is anything specific that you use feel free to bring it with you. But since this is a minimalist checklist I left those items off the list!

For Baby

Your baby does not need as many items as you think they will! With my first I brought what seemed like her entire wardrobe- LOL!! You simply will not need it since they will be in the hospital onesie and swaddle the entire stay. If you’re packing ahead of time- just keep in mind the time of year and type of weather you will be bringing your baby home in.

  • Going home outfit
  • Undershirt/onesie
  • Hat
  • Blanket
  • Receiving blanket
  • Car seat
  • Light outerwear (weather dependent)
  • Special swaddle or name sign for photos (if you plan to take any)

That’s literally it for baby! Don’t go crazy bringing multiple outfits and pajamas because they will not wear them. Think of it as getting just what they need to get them from hospital to home in the car.

For Dad/Birth Partner

Can’t forget about dad/partner!! They will likely need to pack a bag too. My husband brought a suitcase with our first when all he really needed was a backpack!! With covid-19 still around- Jeff will not be allowed to leave the hospital at all while I am admitted. This is the case with many institutions right now and this list keeps that in mind. If your partner will not be staying over or is able to come and go they may not need things like loungewear or sleepwear.

  • Going home clothes
  • 2-3 underwear
  • Loungewear
  • Sleepwear
  • Slippers or socks

That’s it!!! You are all set to have your little one and you can rest assured that you have everything you need to bring home your bundle of joy! Be sure to bookmark this page or share with any expecting moms! Ciao for now!
